The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Custom Apparel in the Ottawa Valley: Embroidery vs. Screen Printing vs. Digital Transfers

Are you looking to create custom clothing but feeling overwhelmed by all the options? You aren’t alone! Whether you’re outfitting a local sports team, creating merch for a big event here in the Ottawa Valley, or designing professional uniforms for your business, choosing the right decoration method is one of the first big questions you’ll need to ask yourself.

Here at Pontiac Printshop in Shawville, Quebec, we are proud to be the Ottawa Valley’s home for custom printing, signs, and clothing. We know that figuring out exactly what you want can be tricky for a newbie. That’s why we’ve broken down the three most popular apparel decoration techniques to help you decide which one is perfectly suited for your project.

Embroidery: The Classic & Professional Choice

Embroidery is a process where a commercial sewing or embroidery machine stitches your design directly into textiles. It is a highly popular choice for corporate apparel, heavy winter jackets, and standard uniforms.

Pros of Embroidery:

  • Highly Durable: An embroidered design is extremely long-lasting and will not fade over time.

  • Professional Look: It provides a high-quality, professional look and feel, adding a unique texture and dimension to the garment.

  • Ideal for Specific Items: It is a fantastic option for branding caps and standard apparel.

Cons of Embroidery:

  • Setup Costs: Every new job requires a digitized creation process, which can lead to setup fees.  If you already have a digital stich file, these setup charges are normally waived.

  • Size Limitations: It is generally not considered ideal for decoration areas with large stitch counts across the back or chest of a shirt.

  • Color Matching Limits: You are typically limited by the available thread colors, meaning you may not be abe match colours precisely.

Screen Printing: Bold Colors & Big Orders

Screen printing is a traditional printing technique that uses a mesh screen as a stencil to push thick, high-quality ink onto a garment. The ink is blocked in areas made impermeable by the stencil, allowing your unique design to transfer smoothly.

Pros of Screen Printing:

  • Bulk Savings: Because it scales so well, this technique is highly economical and cost-effective for large bulk orders.

  • Vibrant and Bold: Screen printing excels at producing bright, vibrant, and opaque colors that stand out boldly, even when applied to dark fabrics.

  • Long-Lasting Durability: The inks used create thick designs that can withstand repeated washing without cracking or fading.

Cons of Screen Printing:

  • Pricey for Small Runs: Short print runs can be quite expensive due to the upfront setup costs, especially under 24.

  • One Color at a Time: Every individual color in your design requires its own brand new screen and a separate layer of ink, increasing setup costs.

  • Limited Fine Details: While excellent for bold, solid designs, screen printing can struggle to cleanly reproduce intricate, for photo-like details we normally recommend a digital transfer.

Digital Transfers: Detail & Flexibility

With digital transfers, your desired graphic is printed digitally onto a special transfer paper or film. A heavy-duty machine then uses heat and pressure to transfer the design directly onto your fabric.

Pros of Digital Transfers:

  • Intricate Details & Gradients: This method is the absolute best choice for capturing intricate details, full-color designs, beautiful gradients, and small text.

  • Cost-Effective for Small Batches: Because it doesn’t require separate screens to be created for each individual color, it is a more affoardable alternative for short print runs or multi-color orders.

  • Versatile: Digital transfers can be successfully applied to a very wide range of materials, including synthetic fabrics like polyester blends.

Cons of Digital Transfers:

  • Durability Concerns: While modern transfers are great, they may not last as long as embroidery after repeated washing.

  • Not Ideal for Big Bulk: For high-volume orders, the per-unit cost can end up being higher compared to the incredible economies of scale you get with screen printing on simpler logos.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose Embroidery if you need multiple colours on a durable, professional look for corporate polos, winter jackets, or hats to brave the beautiful (but chilly) Ottawa Valley weather.

  • Choose Screen Printing if you have a large order with simple, bold colors—perfect for big local events, school spirit wear, or sports teams.

  • Choose Digital Transfers if you need a small batch of custom shirts with high-detail, full-color images or photos.
